The Updays, Freescape Lite and Freerider series offer all the space you need, without the extra weight. These ski touring rucksacks feature zippered compartments, gear straps and avalanche safety compartments that provide quick access to your gear in the most challenging conditions such as steep slopes or on ice. Crampons, skis or a snowboard can be securely attached to the outside, like on a snowshoeing backpack by using gear straps, while hook & loop tabs keep an ice axe or ice tool snug against the pack.

The deuter Freescape Lite

During the development and testing phase of the new Freescape Lite models we were advised and helped by top ski mountaineers, ski tourers and freeride skiers. The resulting multi-purpose ski backpacks come in a 26-liter version or a 24-liter SL version and are designed for challenging ski mountaineering where slightly more gear is needed. A separate reinforced front compartment houses avalanche safety equipment like a shovel, probe etc. in case of emergencies. The Freescape Lite is also prepped for a 3-liter hydration bladder and tube system. By saving weight with the use of lightweight technical fabrics, and the deuter Lite back system, this pack remains lightweight with the addition of touring skis, a snowboard or crampons on the outside.

Keen ski touring and backcountry skiing fans will love how the Freerider ski packpack neatly stows everything they need for skinning uphill and enjoying great turns on the way down. The back system on the Freerider backpack is covered in tough, breathable and snow-shedding fabric. Skis can be attached at the sides or diagonally across the front of the pack, using the modular gear straps that come with this ski pack. And a snowboard or snowshoes can be strapped across the front. A zip-around opening on the back panel means you can access contents in the main compartment without having to unstrap your skis etc. from the outside of the pack.

The Updays ski touring packs from deuter are built for fast-paced, sweat-inducing skinning sessions. This lightweight pack sits snug against the body thanks to the combined effect of adjustable shoulder straps, ergonomic hip fins and a waist belt (that can also be detached when not needed). Its many features are designed with speed of access and easy handling in mind: Quick-fix ski attachments, an easy-access bottom compartment and the hydration system set-up are all accessible without having to take the pack off. The deuter Freerider Pro

This version of the Freerider pack has special features geared towards experienced ski tourers. The Freerider Pro has an easy-access rear opening, and another zipper at the top for two options to access the main compartment. A roll-top closure allows this 32- or 34-liter ski touring backpack to be extended by an extra 10 liters. And a rope strap across the top of the roll-top also helps compress the pack. The deuter Alpine back system offers a secure, solid fit, superior comfort, and effective ventilation. Skis, a snowboard and snowshoes can be attached to the Freerider Pro in a range of different ways using the modular gear straps. Poles and an ice axe can also be securely attached to the pack. There’s nothing holding you back from that next ski mountaineering adventure!

Moving through ice and snow on skis over several days. With the Freescape Pro you can carry everything you need. This ski touring backpack features the deuter Alpine back system, has 38+ or 40+ liters’ capacity and offers a body-hugging solid fit. Which means that even in the most challenging alpine situations, your ski pack will sit exactly where it needs to be. For ski touring, this backpack has a clever layout and multiple options for attaching skis etc. to the outside of the pack. This winter backpack is made from recycled materials, the production of which uses up 27% less virgin resources and therefore generates 28% less CO2.

How to choose the right ski touring backpack

Choosing the right ski touring backpack for you can be a daunting prospect. There’s such a big selection to choose from, and what about getting the right size and fit for you? To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled some of our top tips:

Choosing the right fit: ski touring backbacks for women & men

At deuter, we design a range of ski touring backpack models for both women and men, so that when you’re moving through tough alpine terrain, your ski pack stays securely in position.

Our ski touring backpacks for women have the SL acronym at the end of the product name. With a shorter back length, narrower ergonomic shoulder straps and tapered hip fins, the SL models are designed to suit the female anatomy. But these are not just for women. The SL models are also for anyone with narrower hips and wider pelvis.

The size of ski backpack you choose will largely depend on what you have planned. Is it a ski traverse over several days? Or just skinning next to the piste for a few hours here and there? You can read about backpack sizing in our advice pages.

The size of a ski touring backpack is directly linked to the fit; ski touring backpacks for men have a longer back, and therefore can offer more capacity than SL models.

The weight of the load you can carry in your ski touring backpack depends on what it’s made of and how much capacity it has. If you decide on a small ski backpack, suitable for single-day ski tours, then the recommended total load might be around 4 to 8 kg. For a multi day ski tour, deuter has ski packs with more than 30 liters volume – which can accommodate weights of around 6 to 10 kilograms.

deuter uses polyamide fabric for most of its backpacks: it’s extremely durable and abrasion resistant. Its ripstop properties make the material very hard wearing, which means your backpack will accompany you for many years.

deuter’s backcountry ski backpacks have multiple features. Depending on the kind of ski touring you’re going to undertake, you might want to think of features such as:

An easy-access compartment for avalanche equipment
Ski straps, ice axe loops & a helmet holder
A back system that’s covered in snow-shedding material
Adjustable waist belt and shoulder straps
Insulated hydration system preparation
Clever partitioning such as a valuables pocket or wet clothing compartment

Creating a good fit with your ski rucksack, means you need to adjust it properly when you put it on. Key components here are the hip fins, shoulder straps and hip belt.

First, load up your pack with whatever you’d usually take with you on a ski tour. If you don’t load it first, the fit will be different.
Position the hip fins across your pelvic bone – that will help stabilize the pack for you.
Make sure the shoulder straps are at the correct height: the start of the shoulder straps should be between your shoulder blades.
Buckle all the straps and adjust the length.
