OUR HEAD OFFICE IN GERSTHOFEN IS climatepartner certified
Step by step more sustainable. With the two following projects we compensate our CO2 emissions and are allowed to call our head office in Gersthofen has been ClimatePartner Certified since October 2021.
The ClimatePartner Certification for companies includes direct emissions caused within the company (electricity and heat generation, vehicle fleet, fugitive gases) and indirect emissions caused by purchased energy, business trips, and employee travel. Other indirect emissions that occur outside the company in the production of raw materials and intermediate products, external logistics and the use and disposal of products or other processes are not covered by the ClimatePartner Certification.
Zebras, lions and elephants
Forest protection, Kasigau Wildlife Corridor, Kenya
How do you actually conserve 200,000 hectares of forest? The forest in question is a section of dry forest and savanna in the Kasigau Wildlife Corridor, which connects the Tsavo East and Tsavo West Natural Parks in Kenya. It is home to endangered species such as lions, zebras and parrots as well as countless species of birds. Every day during their seasonal migration, 2,000 African elephants cross the area. However, this forest area is facing massive deforestation and slash-and-burn practices. In order to protect the Kasigau Wildlife Corridor, more than 100 rangers who guard and defend the area have been trained among the local population. More income opportunities for the local population are required in order to stem the depletion of the natural environment. That's why the project creates jobs in factories and small businesses. The project was chosen as the Best Offsetting Project in Environmental Finance's 8th voluntary carbon poll in 2017.
Using Namibia's potential for solar energy
Solar energy, Outapi, Namibia
In Namibia, the sun shines an average of 10 hours a day – it is one of the sunniest countries on earth and therefore has enormous potential for solar energy. However, the country imports 60 percent of its electricity from neighbouring countries and 40 percent of the rural population has no access to electricity at all. In northern Namibia, a ten-hectare solar energy farm produces 9,000 MWh of energy per year.
The project contributes to increasing the share of renewable energies in Namibia's electricity mix to increase and improve the national and regional power supply.
OUR CLIMATEpartner certified PRODUCT RANGE
For our ClimatePartner Certified product series, we reduce their CO2 emissions by using recycled and bluesign® certified materials as well as sustainable technologies, extend their product life cycles and additionally offset them through selected projects.
WITH THESE 3 CLIMATE PROTECTION PROJECTS WE COMPENSATE OUR CLIMATEpartner certified PRODUCTS
Carbon CONSCIOUS
ClimatePartner's carbon footprint guidelines are established based on internationally recognized standards, determining the carbon footprint of a company, product, service, or event. This footprint is then considered offset by contributing to international climate protection projects.
ClimatePartner's certifies that unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions have been offset. For the sake of legibility, all emissions are referred to as CO2 emissions and measured in tonnes of CO2. By this, we mean CO2 equivalents, i. e. all relevant greenhouse gases.
Offsetting CO2 emissions is an important step in holistic climate action, alongside avoidance and reduction. ClimatePartner recommends companies establish and act on CO2 avoidance and reduction plans as a continuous process, and supports them in corresponding strategies. For example, by supporting in defining science based reduction targets, or switching to renewable energy.
Since its inception, 2,500 companies in 35 countries have joined ClimatePartner, including many in the textile industry. The valuable experience gained through this collaboration, combined with ClimatePartner’s expertise, make it much easier to implement actions to help us become climate neutral.
Specifically, there are two steps we are taking:
1. Measuring our carbon emissions
We have collected our CO2 emissions data and calculated our corporate carbon footprint (CCF). That includes emissions from heating and electricity usage, employees’ daily commute to work, business travel, and even office supplies. In a pilot project, we’ve also figured out our product carbon footprint (PCF), by calculating emissions relating to the raw materials, packaging, logistics, and disposal involved in the pilot products and scaling them up to the entire collection.
2. Preventing and reducing carbon emissions
We strive to prevent and reduce our carbon emissions wherever possible. For example, to minimize our CCF, we use green energy and offer our employees incentives to use a company bicycle or car pooling to get to work. Meanwhile, on the product side, we use recycled materials and spun-dyed fibers to significantly decrease our PCF.
We’ve developed a clear roadmap for implementing all of these measures. By 2023, our headquarters and at least 25 percent of our sleeping bags and backpacks will be have significantly reduced environmental impact.
Every time you choose a ClimatePartner product, whether from deuter or another manufacturer, you’re reducing your own carbon footprint. At the same time, you’re indirectly supporting a climate project. Does that sound good? Does it motivate you to do more to prevent climate change? If so, you too can become climate neutral, through your travel and transportation choices and your eating habits.
